The Mission
HostPapa is a hosting service that brings something a little unique to the table. It says its goal is to provide excellent hosting packages powered by renewable energy source. The company has a kind of ‘big family’ feel – sort of like a mom and pop hosting service, which sounds pretty good to me considering how awful some huge hosting companies are (I won’t mention any names).
HostPapa prides itself on its high-quality customer service, reliable web-hosting, cutting-edge data centers, and intuitive control panel and site builder. Reviews I read of the company say that they have very responsive customer support and really take your business seriously. But I find their motto – ‘Let Papa take care of you’ – a little bit Mafia-esque!
This company is located in Niagara Falls, NY and Oakville, Ontario Canada. One thing that makes them unique is their ‘Green Policy.’ Every year, they get an energy audit on their consumption and replace the same amount of energy from a wind farm, so they basically put back all the energy they use.
Papa’s Plans and Pricing
The first thing I was struck by when I looked at their website was how low their prices are. I’ll get to those prices in a minute, but this is absolutely the cheapest web hosting I think I’ve ever seen. It all breaks down like this:
The Webhosting Plan
At the ridiculously low price of $3.95 per month (that’s the 3-year plan, mind you), the Webhosting Plan offers a free domain name for life, and unlimited disk space, monthly bandwidth, and add-on domains. Set-up is free and you get FTP access, a cPanel control panel, and unlimited domain hosting. I’m not sure what this means, but it also says ’100% Green Energy Web Hosting.’
That’s a lot for so little money, but they also have marketing tools, databases, app and web building software, and more. The marketing tools include $50 of Facebook ad credits, $100 of Google Adwords, $25 each of Bing/Yahoo Paid Search and Miva Pay Per Click Advertising, and a whole slew of SEO tools thrown in. The plan has unlimited emails, unlimited domains, programming tools like Perl and Fantastico, SSL encryption capability, and lots more.
Reseller Plan
HostPapa offers their Reseller Plan to help you make money with your domains. They’ve got a Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Titanium plan, but all of them contain the same basics which include unlimited domains and subdomains, unlimited email accounts, free Fantastico and SiteBuilder software, automated billing software, private name servers and support in several different languages. With all of their reseller plans, you can choose your own pricing, features and packaging, and they don’t take a cut of the money you make.
The Bronze plan is the cheapest at $19.95 per month with 50 GB of disk space and 500 GB of bandwidth. Each plan offers more space and bandwidth as you go up in price. Silver is $27.95, Gold is $39.95, Platinum is $59.95 and Titanium is $79.95. As you probably know, titanium is one of the universe’s toughest materials that we know of, and likewise, HostPapa’s Titanium plan is pretty hardcore. It offers 200 GB of disk space and 1.4 TB of bandwidth. Pretty unstoppable.
Mobile Website Plan
HostPapa’s mobile service is called goMobi and you get it with their Mobile Website Plan. It has an easy site builder tool that lets you make mobile sites for smartphones or any other kind of device. There’s no programming required. HostPapa’s mobile sites have click to call functionality and they automatically direct your visitors to the right site by detecting whether it’s a PC or a mobile device. The Mobile Website plan is $4.95 per month. Another cool thing about the plan is that you can try it free for 30 days and if you sign up, you get 2 months free added to it.
What’s Hot and What’s Not About HostPapa
Price is one of the major selling points of HostPapa. As long as you’re okay with signing up for at least 3 years, you get the cheapest rates imaginable, especially when you consider all that their plans offer. If you’re not sure about signing up for a couple of years, you can always try them out first with their free trial. If you’re afraid of commitment, you can sign up for their 2-year plan, which is $5.95 per month, or their 1-year subscription for $6.95. These are still really cheap.
One downside, though, is that they charge high set-up and cancellation fees. They don’t put this in big, bold letters on their website where it’s easy for you to see. Instead, they’re buried in the TOS. When you get started with them it’s $29.95, and setting up your domain costs an initial $24.95. If you decide not to sign up with them and get the refund, you don’t get this money back.
Still on the topic of money, the free advertising that comes with HostPapa’s packages is a major plus. I don’t know of any other web hosting company that’s this generous with ad credits. All of those Facebook ads credits and Google Adwords credits make this a really good deal.
Because HostPapa has its own data centers with full security protection, you can rest easy knowing that you’ve got reliable web-hosting. They guarantee security, fire-suppression systems, fault protection, redundant power generation, backup generators and protection against extreme weather. They also guarantee 99% up-time 24/7.
What Customer Reviews Are Saying About HostPapa
I dug up some other customer reviews to see what they had to say about HostPapa and its service. There are quite a few reviews that say their customer service isn’t all it should be. Some reviews say that their help and support services are really good when you’re on the free trial, but once you actually sign up, they’re not as responsive.
Aside from the price, lots of reviews say they love the ‘Green Policy.’ This is what attracted me to them originally as well. This is a really forward-thinking policy and it’s a good example for other companies to follow. I find it interesting that even negative reviews of HostPapa say they like this about the company.
Another point that lots of people mention is how simple their plans are. There’s nothing confusing because they offer one basic web hosting plan that has more or less unlimited everything. This makes it really easy for even non-techie people to get signed up.
Some reviews complained that there was more downtime than they expected. I read one review that said it took 2 days for them to get her site back up. That’s pretty bad if you’re running an online business. However, she said that their responses were quick and they handled it professionally; it was just a little slow.
I think HostPapa is a great service, especially when you consider price. Their environmental policy is also a nice bonus. I’m not sure if they can really get you 99% uptime, but it’s worth checking them out. After all, you can get a refund if you’re not happy. Click on the links above to redeem our HostPapa Coupons.
