The Features Parallels Desktop Offers
One of the coolest things about Parallels Desktop is that you can use Windows programs on your Mac. They run quickly and smoothly. The company’s products are designed to be easy to use, with as short a set-up time as possible. It’s basically a matter of going through a few quick steps that the program walks you through, and you’re all set up. You’ve now got instant access to all of your data, files and folders, no matter whether they’re for Windows of Mac. You can also run Linux at the same time without having to reboot.
There are lots of products that let you do this, but none I’ve ever seen that are as seamless as Parallels Desktop. All of your programs run smoothly just like there’s no difference between the two operating systems. When you’re running both of them, you see a Windows and Mac desktop on your screen, and you can switch back and forth between them with no interruptions or slowing down.
When it comes to installation, Parallels Desktop offers more flexibility than other companies. You can either import an existing Windows system or run it with a new Windows installation. The other major virtualization software VMWare Fusion 4 doesn’t let you do this. You can only migrate an existing Windows system. The great thing about installing a new Windows DVD with Parallels Desktop is that you get the cleanest system possible.
Parallels Desktop 7 has some major improvements over Desktop 6. First of all, it’s much faster. According to the company, it’s 60 percent faster when using Windows and 45 percent faster if you’re running 3D graphics. It has 90 new and enhanced features over the old version.
Lots of these enhancements are because of the new integration options with Mac OS X Lion. These include full-screen mode, Mission Control, Launch Pad, and the ability to use your Mac’s FaceTime camera or iSight with Mac and Windows at the same time.
Another thing I liked about it is its multiple viewing options. You can run both operating systems side by side, open each as a separate window, use transparent windows, or run either operating system in full-screen mode. This is really nice because you can switch it up to suit your needs at any given moment.
What I Like Best About Parallels Desktop 7
I’m a Mac freak but I also use Windows programs, so Parallels Desktop 7 is perfect for me. When you use it, it runs your Windows programs in a Mac-like way, which is a huge bonus for Mac lovers. You can use Mac features like Apple Gestures and Expose with your Windows programs. It also runs Windows programs with Mac-quality graphics, which its competitors don’t.
I also liked the fact that it gives you complete read/write access to all of your Mac files. This is part of its seamless integration between operating systems. What it means is that you don’t have to worry about different file formats. With some virtualization software, you end up spending a bunch of time changing file formats and tweaking before you can alter files. Not so with Parallels Desktop 7.
Finally, it’s not part of the Windows-Mac integration, but the software program comes with Snapshots. This lets you go back to previous versions of files or programs if you happen to mess up the current version. For example, if you screw up editing a file and ruin it, you can get the version of the file from before you messed it up and the data is still there.
Downsides Of Parallels Desktop 7
There wasn’t too much I didn’t like about this program. If you compare it to its major competitors, it’s a little bit pricey. It retails at $79.99 for the full version (there are cheaper versions, but they’re not recommended), while VMWare Fusion 4 is around $40. But I’d still go for Parallels because of its enhanced performance and features that are way beyond what VMWare offers.
If you want to use your machine for hardcore gaming, Parallels Desktop 7 may not be the choice for you. Although you can run it with DirectX 9 Windows applications, it doesn’t run smoothly at all. There are all kinds of flaws and bugs. Hopefully, they’ll get rid of these in future versions of the program.
It also might be a little bit disappointing if you’re just using it for Linux. Linux works perfectly well, of course, but you don’t get the same visuals. In other words, when you run Linux, it just looks like Linux.
What Customers Have To Say
I spent some time reading reviews online to see what other people thought and here’s what I came up with. Lots of reviews say that it’s definitely faster than older versions and it makes multitasking much easier. Other folks doubt the claims by the company that each version’s faster. They say that each version has a 60 percent increase in speed.
Some reviews said that the program was a little bit sluggish when using Coherence Mode. Coherence Mode is where you can run both operating systems side-by-side (as opposed to using multiple windows). Other reviewers mentioned some sluggishness occasionally or memory leaks, but overall people seemed to be happy with the speed and performance.
Quite a few reviews that I read said they were really happy with how easy it is to use. Not all virtualization software is so user-friendly. Installation is quick and easy, and you’re ready to get started. Everything is intuitive and there are plenty of resources to help you figure things out if you get stuck.
One thing I would recommend is that if you’re going to buy Parallels Desktop 7, make sure you understand how the upgrades work. Some reviews said they enjoyed the free upgrade while others complained that they had to pay $40 or more. What gives? I don’t know, but read the fine print and make sure you understand.
Overall, I think that Parallels Desktop 7 is the best virtualization software out there. It’s fast and it has more features than any other. The price is a little high and there are still some areas for the developers to work on, but this program appears to be the best yet.
